Looking into the Future with Open Hands—Create a Life Plan

If you are a Jesus follower like me, or grew up around other Jesus followers, you have probably heard this verse:

“'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. '” — Jeremiah 29:11

I believe those words with all of my heart, and as a believer it is a foundational part of how my family makes decisions. Knowing this, it may surprise you that my wife and I also have a 4 page document with projections, goals, milestones, our ages, and predictions that span over the next 10 years of life. We reference this document at least once a week as we discuss our future, make decisions, and chase our dreams. We have Jeremiah 29:11 plastered in big letters at the top of the document along with a disclaimer that reads:

“Disclaimer: this doc is for a birds-eye view only and not to show a set of expectations or try to control the future. This doc is to guide decision making second to following Jesus’ lead.”

Whether you follow Jesus or not, it is important to look into the future and write down what you see… but keep your hands open and hold your plans loosely. Write in pencil or keep your document in editable form on your computer. Know that a good plan or blueprint comes with many changes, tweaks, and adjustments.

I encourage you to try this with your spouse, partner, or trusted friend. Look into the future and write down what you see. This will become a central hub for you as you make wise decisions and discern opportunities or challenges as they come up.
